City Nest Team

You’ve received an offer from a UK university, enrolled at a language school or said yes to a new job offer. Congratulations! You are at one of the most exciting turning points of your life. But before you book your plane ticket and take off above the clouds, there is a critical to-do list you need to tick off.
Don’t let wrestling with bureaucracy or stressing about where to stay overshadow this wonderful experience. At City Nest, we have broken the process down for you. Here is your stress-free, 3-stage guide to moving to the UK!
Stage 1: Critical Planning (3–6 Months Before Your Flight)
This stage is all about legal permissions and finalising the right study programme. Leaving things to the last minute is the process’s biggest enemy.
- Finalise Your Study Programme: If you still haven’t decided which language school or summer programme to attend, choose the one that best fits your goals from City Nest’s partner Boarding Language Schools and Summer Schools.
- Start the Visa Process: UK visa (UKVI) rules are complex. Whether it’s a short-term visitor visa or a long-term student (Tier 4) visa, start gathering your documents early.
- Passport Check: Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return date.
City Nest Tip: To avoid unpleasant surprises such as a visa refusal, get in touch with City Nest’s Professional Visa Consultancy team. Let us prepare your file, from your statement of purpose to your financial statements.
Stage 2: Choosing Your Home (1–3 Months Before Your Flight)
Once your visa has been approved or the process is on track, we move on to the most important step: finding yourself a safe and comfortable home. In a metropolis like London, finding a place at the last minute both strains your budget and forces you to lower your expectations.
- Budget and Needs Analysis: Do you want an independent flat of your own, or would you rather meet new people in a sociable co-living development?
- Book Your Accommodation: Choose all-inclusive options so you don’t have to deal with conventional tenancy agreements, setting up bills and finding a guarantor.
- Check the Location: Use a map to confirm the distance from your chosen residence or flat to your school, workplace and the Tube network.
City Nest Tip: Book your place now at our properties in the city’s most central locations. With our luxury studios with bills included, just grab your suitcase and come – no worries about furniture or bills.
Stage 3: Final Preparations (2–4 Weeks Before Your Flight)
The countdown has begun! At this stage, you should wrap up the practical details so you can prepare for your flight day with peace of mind.
- Financial Preparation: Carry some cash in pounds sterling for your first few weeks. Digital banking is very common in the UK (Revolut, Monzo, etc.); research how to open these accounts before you go.
- Health and Insurance: If you take any regular medication, get enough to last your stay (together with the prescriptions).
- Packing: Don’t forget how changeable the British weather is. Make sure you bring an umbrella, windproof jackets and clothes suitable for layering. And don’t forget to buy a plug adapter (UK adapter)!
