The UK is accelerating the digital transformation of its immigration processes and moving away from physical visa documents. Under the new system, BRP cards and visa stickers (vignettes) in passports are gradually being replaced by the eVisa (digital immigration status) system.
So what does this mean? What will you show at the airport? Will there really be no visa in your passport any more? In this guide we explain the whole process simply and clearly 👇
The UK eVisa Era: Up-to-Date 2026 Guide and What You Need to Know
The UK is accelerating the digital transformation of its immigration processes and moving away from physical visa documents. Under the new system, BRP cards and visa stickers (vignettes) in passports are gradually being replaced by the eVisa (digital immigration status) system.
What Is an eVisa and What Is Changing?
An eVisa is a system in which your immigration status in the UK is held digitally rather than as a physical document. Your visa is no longer a sticker in your passport or a card in your wallet, but a digital status registered in the UKVI system against your passport number.
Changes After 25 February: From 25 February, the UK accelerated the move to the digital system and BRP cards began to be phased out.
Important Note: The system is not yet fully uniform; while eVisas are becoming widespread for long-term visas, sticker visas may continue in cases such as short-term language school courses.
The Most Critical Step: Your UKVI Account and Linking Your Passport
The most important step to avoid problems with the eVisa system is to create and activate your UKVI account.
Passport Match: The passport in your UKVI account must be exactly the same as the passport you travel with.
Updating: When you renew your passport, you must update the details in the system; otherwise you risk being refused boarding or having problems at the border.
What Awaits You at the Airport?
As the system displays your visa automatically, the process is usually quick. Even so, it's useful to carry the following documents with you:
- Course invitation letter and proof of finances.
- School acceptance letter and accommodation details.
- Visa decision letter and return ticket.
The Difference Between an ETA and a Visa for Turkish Citizens
A point that Turkish citizens often confuse is the ETA system. Citizens of the Republic of Türkiye cannot get an ETA; they must apply for a Visitor Visa even for short visits.
What You Need to Do After 25 February
1) Create a UKVI account: Create a UKVI account with the e-mail address you used in your application and complete the verification steps.
2) Verify your identity: Register your passport in the system. If you have an old or renewed passport, be sure to update it.
3) Link your visa / status: Link the eVisa to your account by adding your GWF / UAN application reference or your BRP number, if you have one.
4) Update your passport details: The passport you will travel with must be exactly the same as the passport in the UKVI system.
5) Family and dependants: Statuses for spouses and children must be set up separately and linked to the correct accounts.
6) Prepare proof before travelling: Download a PDF of the “View your visa / status” screen. Keep it for situations where you have no internet access.
7) Airline check: If you have a problem during online check-in, tell the check-in agent that you are registered in the eVisa system and show your PDF.
Latest Note: Recently, many people have been receiving e-mails asking them to activate their UKVI account. However, even without an invitation, most people can create their account themselves, and their visa status can be added manually.
How Much Does an eVisa Cost?
For applications made from Türkiye, there is no separate fee for the eVisa. Only the visa application fee and the IHS (healthcare surcharge) are paid.
Advantages and Risks
- No need to carry physical documents.
- Passport changes are easy to update.
- Border checks are quicker.
- If your passport doesn't match, you may have problems entering the country.
- Account errors can cause verification delays.
- Lack of offline access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to show my eVisa at the airport?
Usually not. Checks are carried out automatically through the system, but it is useful to have the PDF with you.
Will my eVisa be deleted if I change my passport?
No, you just need to add the new passport to the system.
Does it also apply to language school students?
Yes, it can be used for all short- and long-term statuses.
Is there an extra fee?
No, there is no separate charge for the eVisa.
What happens if the system doesn’t recognise me?
Your passport match is checked; you log in to your UKVI account and the matter is resolved with the PDF and manual verification.
What is the difference between an ETA and a visa?
The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a pre-travel authorisation for citizens of visa-exempt countries and is obtained quickly and entirely online.
A visitor visa, on the other hand:
- Is required for visa-national passports
- Involves a detailed assessment process
- Requires biometrics (fingerprints)
- Takes longer to reach a decision
Can citizens of the Republic of Türkiye get an ETA?
No. Turkish citizens must apply for a Visitor Visa for short visits.
Which documents should I have with me at the airport?
Although the system is digital, the following documents are useful at border control:
- Passport
- Visa decision letter
- Accommodation details
- Return ticket
- Course / invitation letter (if applicable)
- Proof of financial means
I’ve renewed my passport – what happens to my eVisa?
The eVisa and ETA system is linked to your passport. When your passport changes:
- You need to update your status, or
- It must be matched with your new passport details.
📌 Details should always be applied in line with the official decision letter.
